Cambridge Audio 640a Azur amplifier

840A
Suggested Retail $1499

sold out

At first glance, the 840a seems to represent a departure from the traditional Cambridge philosophy of great performance at a very affordable price.  A second glance confirms that Cambridge is still designing with the same goal but they have significantly upped the performance ante with the new 840A.  This new integrated is going up at against amps in the $2000-$3000 range and it holds its own.  The heart of this amp is Cambridge Audio's new patent pending XD amplifier technology, a design in which the amp spends a fair bit of its operation in pure Class A mode and when it switches to B mode, it does it without the switching distortion that affects most AB amps.

Sophisticated, relay and resistor precision stepped volume control ensures precise channel matching and sound far superior to typical motorized volume controls and IC driven volume controls.

Massive custom built toroidal transformer uses dual secondary windings for dual mono operation of the output section.  Note a smaller custom toroidal in the rear right, this supplies a completely separate preamp power supply.

Designed specially for this amplifier, Cambridge is using Low Impedance, Low ESR caps to supply ultra clean power for the output devices.

When the amp is first turned on, the display shows the checking process to determine if the speaker connections are correct.  Volume settngs and selected input are clearly visible.  The buttons on either side of the display select from the 8 inputs. The input labels can be customized for your own system.

The rear panel is what you would expect from on a high performance amplifier.  Gold plated, heavy duty gold plated binding posts ensure a secure connection to the speaker cable.  Note the pair of balanced input jacks as well as RCA jacks.
