The Classic 2 preamplifier is available as either a line-stage, or with an optional phono stage. Both stages are zero-feedback circuits. When equipped with a phono section it uses two triode amplifiers separated by a passive RIAA equalization network. The second triode amplifier is direct coupled to a high-current output stage. The line-level section has a single triode amplifier also direct coupled to a high-current output stage. These output buffer stages minimize the output impedance, making the Classic 2 compatible with nearly all installations, including those requiring long lengths of interconnect cables.
Premium quality component parts are specified for the Classic 2 to assure full realization of the potential performance of the circuit designs and to dependably sustain that performance for years to come. Precision, metal-film resistors yield low noise performance for greatest clarity. Polypropylene and polystyrene capacitors, used exclusively in both the audio circuits and the regulated plate voltage supplies, offer maximum temporal accuracy. Phono equalization in the Classic is accomplished with 1% tolerance precision parts to assure tonal neutrality. Industrial quality controls offer extended life and maintain a crisp, precise feel.
From a design standpoint, the Classic 2 shares a lot with its predecessor, the orignal Classic. The most notable change is replacing the M8080 tubes with the 6922. This is same tube used in the next model up, the ET3. The Classic 2 also shares heritage with the GAT preamp as there have been some changes reflecting cj's work developing the GAT.
